Cost of In-Home Care for Seniors
By ProMatcher Staff
Question: How Much Does In-Home Senior Care Cost?
Answer: The average cost of in-home senior care is about $18-25 per hour (for non-medical care). The cost of in-home elder care is determined by several different factors:
1. Your geographic location. Where do you live? As a general rule, prices tend to be higher in urban areas. Typically, you’ll pay a little bit less in rural areas.
2. Short-term or Long-term. After a surgery or a bad fall, you or your loved one may required short-term in-home care. If you or your loved one has a chronic illness or disability, this may require long-term care.
3. Medical or Non-Medical. Medical care is more expensive than non-medical care. Having a nurse or a nursing assistant come to your home will cost more than the services of a home health aide.
4. Number of hours needed. How many hours of help do you need? Most in-home care providers charge an hourly rate. Do you need help a few hours a week or do you need around-the clock-care? For some people, a weekly or daily checkup may be just enough. In other cases, a family may need help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Overnight or live-in care will be more expensive.
5. Services needed. What type of services are you looking for? In-home care providers can help with a variety of different tasks, including light housework, meal planning, grocery shopping, prescription monitoring, running errands, transportation to doctors appointments, personal hygiene, dressing, and even companionship. The cost of in-home care will depend on the level of care needed.
6. Insurance coverage. What type of insurance coverage do you have? In some cases, a health insurance policy may cover some of the costs of in-home care.
7. Check references. Before hiring an in-home care provider, do your research. Verify credentials and check references. You’ll want to verify the home care agency is properly licensed, accredited, and insured.
